The University Language Centre is an inter-department centre providing services for teaching and learning foreign languages.

The teaching facilities comprise: one computer language laboratory with 30 PCs connected to the network and 60 student places; one multi-media classroom equipped for simultaneous interpreting; two language laboratories. Independent learning facilities comprise a laboratory with audio-active-comparative equipment, a video library with video-viewing stations and a computer laboratory with 15 PCs with local network and Internet access.

The Centre makes the following services available to users:

• language courses with audio-cassettes, phonetics courses, exercises and mock tests (dictation, summarising, translation) grammar books, dictionaries, etc.
• multimedia language courses, exercises and tests on computer, CD-ROM about culture, Internet connection
• satellite TV channels (viewing must be booked), original language films (with glossary and script transcription), videos and documentaries, television recordings
• Music CDs (the video library currently holds more than 1,000 titles).

To help choose between these various options, all materials are catalogued in a database which can be checked using any of the computers in the computer room, and which give a brief description of contents (level, activity) and useful advice about using them.
