The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (now Department of Management, Economics and Quantitative Methods) came into being under the Chancellorship of Pietro Enrico Ferri to satisfy the interests of the Consortium comprising the Bergamo Town Council, the Province and the Chamber of Commerce, financers of the Institute of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The advantages were: an increase in the teaching staff and the number of students, and, not least, the satisfaction of the financers at the University's capacity to provide qualified personnel for local administration and business.
In the eighties the Departmente inreased its importance by equalling the number of students in the historic Languages Department. Economics now has about 3,000 students thanks to its courses which extend from Economics to I.T. and ultimately with Economic and financial security, this latter being open only to students of the Accademia della Guardia di Finanza.
