Class: L-5 - Philosophy
Objectives
Why choose a Degree course in Philosophy at the University of Bergamo?
- To evaluate critically the reality (as distinct from the appearances) of the society we live in, and to interrogate rather
than merely undergo the images we encounter
- To investigate the sources and forms of the knowledge that has been built up in our tradition
- To develop the argumentative skills needed to face both abstract and concrete problems.
The study of Philosophy provides important tools for current public debates, from the growing pressure to face the issues of
contemporary life to the urgent need to find bases on which different cultures can be compared.
The first year of study is given over to institutional and propedeutic courses that furnish students with the elements
for understanding the various aspects and tendencies within philosophical thought, considered both in a historical light
and for the specifics of its contents; the next two years offer options for specialisation (historicaltheoretical-epistemological,
logico-linguistic, ethico-political). The teaching style adopts a didactic model that has been tried and tested in European
universities and that, in addition to lectures, envisages seminars and laboratories aimed at stimulating the oral and written skills
of individual participants.
Career opportunities
The opportunities in the world of work opened up by Philosophy Degree courses include the various sectors
in which an arts education is linked with the ability to use critical, interpretive and operative skills. The Philosophy graduate
offers a flexible professional profile, able to specialise in various fields of public administration (from personnel direction
to human resource management) and in the world of publishing and communication, both traditional and multimedia.
Entry tests
There is no selection test for enrolment in the course, but there is a test to ascertain the student's initial level of
competences.

SERVICES FOR THE DEGREE COURSE
Evaluation tests
Evaluation tests are freely available on line on the University Website for the following foreign
languages: French, English, Spanish and German. Passing these tests ensures that students have
the minimum linguistic competences required to then take the Foreign Language Tests attesting to
their knowledge of the language which are part of their Plan of Studies.
Tutoring
The Faculty offers a tutoring service involving teaching staff, tutors and students. The aim is
to assist and advise students in their studies. In particular, help is given to students
enrolling in the weeks just before lessons start and assistance is given as regards transfers
from vecchio ordinamento to nuovo ordinamento, and from other universities or other degree
courses. Advice is given also as regards the student’s choice of specialization and his study and
training projects.
Training
Various opportunities are offered which are linked to the student's training and thesis topic.
These are the result of collaboration between the University and host companies or public bodies,
both of which aim to identify the trainee's objectives, plan the activities to be undertaken by
the trainee (backed up and supervised by the university teaching staff and tutors) and outline
the end result.
International relations
The Faculty has implemented collaboration and international exchanges with the Universities of
Barcelona, Perpignan, Geneva, Freiburg ...
