The Faculty of Foreing Languages and Literatures (now Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Communication Studies) was born with the founding of the "Istituto Universitario di Lingue e Letterature Straniere". The choice of a language institute coincided with closing of the language course at the Bocconi University in Milan, and was based on a careful analysis of the potential offer in the Bergamo area. The Faculty grew enormously in the eighties and nineties, thanks also to the School of Slavonic studies which is the most active of the cultural Centres in Italy.
The very first Faculty of Bergamo University (despite the transfer of some of its courses to the new Departments of Arts and Philosophy and Human and Social Sciences) still has more than 3,800 students, which is a demonstration of its ability to adapt new degree courses to the requirements of the area and the market in general. The degree courses in Public and Institutional Mass Media Communication and Intercultural Communication for Cooperation and Business are just some of the examples of the Faculty's policy to guarantee the formation of a critical capacity leading to an understanding of the complexity of culture and the ability to confront an ever-changing world.
