Suggestions for educational and recreational itineraries
around the fortified town
The growing interest and feeling towards our historical heritage
implies a revaluation of the walled cities included in this project.
Didactic elements must be created, aimed not only at children,
but also at other visitors.
This will be the way to create new history and to preserve monuments
in good condition, and also to generate financial resources for
their enhancement.
First of all, an “Information Centre” must be set
up where visitors can gather, with an exhibition area to increase
understanding of the history of our walls.
To start with, the following introductory phrases are necessary:
- Faithful historical reconstruction of the areas.
- Direct contact with the relative places.
- Creation of didactic paths to allow visitors to get the feel
of the environment.
- Chronological presentation of erection of the walls and their
decline.
- Stimulation of the visitor's creativity through interactive
elements and reproductions.
- Notices placed to identify elements and routes, by means of
easily comprehensible information points.
The strategy to give the walls a social function should target
four kinds of visitors:
1. Children: explanations so that they can understand the historical
events, their consequences and interactions. A series of didactic
documents and activities, such as interactive activities, games,
etc. must be produced to allow these concepts to be assimilated.
These visits are normally made by classes of schoolchildren, so
it is necessary to arrange educational reports for the teachers
so that they can then give explanations during the visit.
2. Families: the same principles as before, but also taking into
account the information needs of young people and the possibility
of stimulating activities where adults and children could cooperate
with each other.
3. Individuals: a target with a more or less specialist knowledge
of the subject.
4. Senior citizens: these visits must be stimulating and descriptive.
To develop these strategies, the following spaces must be created:
1. An exhibition space to provide explanations of basic notions.
2. Reconstruction space: to apply what has been shown through
practical components of conceptual references.
3. Play spaces to encourage creativity and fun.
4. Social and community spaces to make the place and its environment
dynamic.
