Educational goals

After completing the course the student will manage the basic concepts related to the dynamics of motor vehicles and to their safety and security issues.
In particular she'll get an overview of the basic parameters that affect the dynamic behavior of a vehicle and he'll be able to formulate models to describe that behavior.

Course content

Characterization of the tire. Brush model and Magic formulas. Longitudinal vehicle dynamics: -gradeability, top speed, acceleration, fuel economy. -braking, braking distribution and anti-lock devices. Vehicle handling: -kinematic and dynamic steering -bicycle model -vehicle stability. Vehicle ride: -suspensions type -anti-squat/dive properties -quarter/half car model -passive/active suspensions -influence of suspensions on handling. -comfort and vibration absorption. Vehicle safety and pedestrian protection.

Teaching methods

Frontal lectures (32 hrs), numerical workouts (16hrs)with MATLAB and examples with a commercial multibody software.
20 hours seminar with a foreign teacher.

Assessment and Evaluation

The exam consists of an oral discusssion that focuses on the topics of the course. The students, who will attend the seminar with the foreign teacher, will have also the opportunity to present a brief dissertation on a topic of interest.
