Educational goals

Students acquire the concepts regarding territoriality declined in the concepts of space, nature, territory, environment, landscape and place. Furthermore, they identify the characteristics of territorial planning within tourism in relation to local communities’ environmental awareness, sustainability and participation.

Course content

The course shows the relationship between environment and tourism in a geographic context. Taking up the concept of sustainability, the course deals with the three aspects of environmental and tourism policies: a) the role of territory in tourism; b) environment as a resource for building identity; c) social empowerment on global and local scales.

Textbooks and reading lists

1. Holden, Andrew (2008) Environment and Tourism, London: Routledge (second edition), (pp. 274).
2. Alan A. Lew, C. Michael Hall, Allan M. Williams, The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Tourism, Wiley-Blackwell, Chichester, 2014, Part 3 (chapters: 8, 9, 10,11, 12, 13, 14) and Part 4 (chapters 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42) (pp. 200).

Teaching methods

The course is held through lectures, but with a specific attention to the interaction and the participation of students. For this reason, there will be interactive lessons with the participation of students. This method is supported by visual tools (power point presentations) and multimedia connections, in order to facilitate learning.

Assessment and Evaluation

The exam is oral and concerns two interviews on the two parts of the didactic area. It verifies that students acquire concepts presented at lesson.
In particular:
- the theoretical concepts developed during lessons;
- the critical ability to apply to specific case studies and connect the topics and concepts.;
- the ability to apply examples on tourism, environment, interculture in an international context.
The exam evaluation - resulting from the average of the two interviews and a general evaluation of the student - will be expressed on thirty points, communicated to students and registered in their on line career book.
