B2/C1 level ability in English (Common European Framework)
On a metalinguistic level, the educational goals of this module are focussed on the acquisition of a critical knowledge of the role of English in tourist communication. They also are focussed on the study of the English language at a C1+ level of the Common European Framework. The educational goals are also coherent with those of the international MA in Planning and Management of Tourism Systems where this module is held (with reference to AREA no. 10), which deals with the discourse of tourism in various international contexts. At last, they are coherent with the AVA requirements for the L-LIN/12 sector, since they are focussed on the study of those aspects of the English language in such specialised contexts as the tourism industry.
The main syntactic, lexical and textual features of English employed in tourism in specialised and promotional contexts (supply and demand, planning and management) will be analysed in tourism authentic texts.
The course will be based on lectures, but special attention will be given to debate and students will be encouraged to suggest topics for further analysis. Students will also be invited to attend the language practice sessions planned within the weekly schedule for their level of competence, and any tutoring activities on offer throughout the year.
The course may be held on-line or partially on-line. If so, here might be differences from what above indicated, in order to make the both the course and the final exam more feasible.
The exam comprises the following:
(A) Written test on pc.
The pass level is 60% to be obtained in each of the above mentioned parts.
The mark of the pc test is valid for 18 months
(B) Oral test:
(1) discussion of 6 research articles published from 2018 and chosen from:
• "Tourism and Hospitality Research (THR)"
• “Tourist studies " [Three articles] .
Both journals are available on-line from the library website (SAGE journals online).
Please note that "Book Reviews" and "Short Notices" are not accepted for discussion.
(2) ppt or poster presentation
(3) discussion in English on topics dealt with during the lessons and on texts 1 and 2.
The exam will be a discussion (in English) of the course topics: at least three questions will be asked, so as to assess the acquisition of course contents
The grading will be based on 1) linguistic correctness, 2) clarity and coherence, and 3) competence as to the course content.
