Prerequisites

Competences and skills acquired in the first module.

Educational goals

The typology of skills and abilities that students will acquire in the second module of the course is the same as that of the first: students will acknowledge the tools (dictionaries, media etc.) and the basic translating methods. They will also develop skill in the application of them in the translation from Russian of some literary texts. At the end of the course, students will be able to identify and put into practice the translation strategies most appropriate to the communicative functions of the texts to be translated.
In the second module changes the type and level of difficulty of the texts proposed for translation.

Course content

If in the first module were presented pieces of literary and journalistic prose of average difficulty, in the second will be proposed texts of “poetic prose” or texts of lyric poetry with the purpose of achieving more and more fine skill of translation.

Teaching methods

The course has eminently a character of workshop, although it never will lose touch with the theoretical contributions presented in the first module.
The teaching process, in Russian/Italian languages, involves a first reading of the text assigned to the identification of unknown words, a second reading to a in-depth analysis of the text in order to find the equivalents in Italian, or ‘prohibitions’ posed by linguistic or cultural incompatible codes.
The translation solutions of the students will be discussed collectively.
The attendance, which is not compulsory, is however STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Assessment and Evaluation

WRITTEN EXAM:
The written exam consists in the translation into Italian of a literary passage of about 250 words to perform in three hours. Monolingual, bilingual dictionaries and dictionary of synonyms and antonyms are allowed. Students must demonstrate not only their linguistic competence on Russian language, but also skill in the identification of the most adequate Italian expressions, a high level of linguistic sense and aesthetic elegance such as to produce a translation ready to be published.
ORAL EXAM:
1. Correction of the own written tests;
2. Discussion on the translation choices made;
3. One or two questions about the contents of the reference texts on translation theory.
EVALUATION:
The final mark exam (18/30 is the pass level) is calculated based on the evaluations of written and oral exams.
