Educational goals

The objectives of this course are as follows:
a) obtain an overview of how the research field of translation theory arises, in relation to the historical processes that determine its consolidation
b) distinguish text types
c) acquire basic information on translation strategies and techniques.

Course content

The didactic module aims to reconstruct the fundamental historical stages of the art of translating starting from the ancient world to arrive at modernity. The value of the translation of the literary text as a medium of cultural transference in the European context will be highlighted.
In a second part of the module the various theories of translation in the twentieth century according to historical periods are addressed: structuralism, automatic translation in the fifties - sixties, textual analysis in the seventies - early eighties, the sociolinguistic path of translation studies in the eighties - nineties. Further ideas for reflection and research will be provided.
Attending students will therefore learn to master some basic concepts necessary to address issues of intercultural pragmatics.

Teaching methods

The lessons will be held in Italian in frontal mode in the classroom, with the involvement of the students, who can ask further questions. We will make use of at least two introductory manuals (selected parts) and reference will be made to some practical examples, with the addition of individual textual materials functional to the purpose.
NB: "Should the teaching come
given in mixed or remote mode, changes may be introduced with respect to what
declared in the syllabus to make the course and exams usable also in these ways.

Assessment and Evaluation

The exam will be taken by the student orally. There are three questions in Italian, which concern
1) the history of translation
2) the theories on translation in a diachronic dimension
3) the project, strategies and techniques of translation
To obtain a positive judgment, students must be able to manage the historical and cultural framework of the topics covered and know the salient aspects of the evolution of the history and theory of translation. To obtain a good judgment, students will have to master the vocabulary and problems related to the theory of translation, tracing them back to the bibliographic material provided. To obtain an excellent judgment, students will have to demonstrate that they have a homogeneous vision of the topics discussed, that they master the bibliographic material in a critical way, that they know how to connect the topics between them and that they have an expressive mastery.

Erasmus and Double Degree students are requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to discuss how to prepare for the exam. Students who have not attended the lessons relating to the module can obtain support materials to supplement the course, after direct contact with the teacher during office hours.
NB: Students are required to present themselves to the final exam with the texts and materials required by the program.
